The GREAT ESCAPE, from 1965, also makes you feel like you’re there in a World War II era film.

@monkael1438
i think a part of the reason the "thing" was so shocking is that it happened really early on.

@RacingSnails64
It was honestly pretty damn good. I started off super jaded and unimpressed but I got increasingly more invested as it went on. A few parts that were too slow and too long, but after the mineshaft with the rats and the one guy getting dust in his eyes...yeah, you might say I was hooked.

Loved Mark Strong and Cumberbatch's performances, even though they were only in one scene each!! They provided little bits of recognizability and comfort in this long-ass trek lol.

why are youtuber movie critics/reviewers so... stupid? Like where's the pretentious monotone, unanimated, greying, lightly autistic failed artists when you need them, i don't need a song and dance and a faint retelling I want a borderline ethnography

@Jhowy-wu3mr
It felt like if you brought a modern camera to WWI and followed two runners as a wartime footage cameraman. Like the most dedicated cameraman ever at getting a good shot while being shot, blown up, being chased by Germans, ducking in and out of houses, hitting the ground in the dark, braving river currents, and stepping into no man’s land to get the wartime footage shot of a lifetime running with the soldiers.

😂Like I genuinely felt exhausted towards the end sitting in a theatre and it freaked me out! I was so immersed I felt like I was gonna be sore in the morning from running next to this soldier for two days.

@i-dislike-handles
The guys who made this movie NEED to make a sequel called "1918" about the Americans in the First World War, it'd be the perfect sequel. Hell, they could even make a few prequels: 1916, about the Battle of Verdun. 1915, about the Gallipoli campaign. 1914, about the Austro-Hungarian invasion of Serbia. This war is rich with untold stories.

@dabarboza51
When they only load the rifles 5 round magazine once in the whole movie. And you see him cycle the bolt constantly, not reloading in a couple of scenes. It kinda of ruins the authenticity. And abandoning your gear, especially his rifle...not very realistic. And the rat scene...they’re both dead. But a pretty good move...not the best for me...

@Adamlovesvideos
the plot is terrible and it makes no sense. We need to deliver this extremely crucial letter or the tides of war will change in the German's favor what are we gonna do? Are we going to give it to a air pilot to make sure it gets there as quickly as possible? No airfares are too high. How about we send a butt load of troops with trucks which clearly we have to assure it gets there safely. NO. We're going to send 2 soldiers with fuck all and hope it gets there. It would be reasonable if it was something minor or if they were just cannon fodder, because its just 2 guys fuck em, but something that important and they only send two guys is absolutely ridiculous.

@SharksandDinos
Unfortunately, the movie did not please me as it did for everyone else. I don't it's a bad movie by any means, but a movie that has one big dent that keeps it from being one of the best films of the last and new decade. Now, I really like the cinematography because it makes the film look like it is filmed as one big scene and it makes the film feel more genuine that way since it does take place during World War I. I also really like how the setting and execution work well together along with the cinematography to give off the feeling that you are actually there to fighting against the Germans and walk alongside the characters. Speaking of feelings, you actually do get that one jump scare with the rat setting off the tripwire and the feeling of fear when the trench start collapsing as a result. Most horror movies nowadays fail to make audiences feel genuine fear after a jump scare.
.
Despite those positive things I have for the film, there is one thing that puts a dent in the film for me. The main and minor characters were stupid. I get that you are not always going to think logically when you are scared especially in a war, but you should not be stupid either and these characters do some things that you shouldn't do in a war. One they were told not to go into the one pit that one of soldiers told them, "It's deeper than it looks." The characters go into that pit even though they were told not to do that. Secondly, they get their clothes wet. That may not sound like a big deal, but in the Marines for example, they tell you to not to get yourself wet to prevent rashes between your legs and blisters on your feet. Especially in this situation where you have to cross into enemy territory, the water if filled with tons of bacteria from dead bodies and lead or other chemicals from different weapons. Needless to say, they can give you horrible infections even when you have an open wound.
.
To kill two birds with one stone, they save a German and the main character drinks milks in a pail. I get that it is human nature to save a person and to quench your thirst when possible, but you still need to be cautious with both, but they weren't which lead to one of them getting killed. The smarter thing they should have done is either kill the German immediately or hold him down at gun point, check for weapons, and checked to see what side he is affiliated with. If he is a German, than they should have just kill him without either one of them dying. For the milk, you should smell it first, check to see if its thick (if you can) or don't chance it. Especially don't give it to a baby after it has been hours out of refrigeration (which it was in the open when found.)
.
Speaking of which he stopped paying attention for the German hunting him down after he found a woman along with her baby. He even gives her a milk to the baby (which likely spoiled by now.) Other than the fact he gave likely spoiled milk to a baby, he should have kept his guard up and still be paying attention to the places the German could appear to kill him even if he doesn't appear. Also, no just because we as the audience knows that he's going to make it out alive doesn't mean the character knows he's going to make it out alive.
.
In the end, my opinion is not the end all be all as people are going to have different opinions than mines. Some will agree and others will disagree and that's okay we don't have to agree with everyone or even like the same thing everyone else likes. I am not saying you should not like this movie because of the flaws I have with it, but I am saying that we as people should express our opinion and think about why we like or don't like certain movies. Especially those that have wide acclaim by people, which on makes discussion or hearing about them more interesting. However, comments like "You're so stupid, stick to the MCU damn it," "You think Bird of Prey is the better movie," "I bet your brain is made more for Michael Bay films," should be ignored and will be ignored by me. Instead, constructive criticism should be considered and they might change your mind if you take the time and think about them.
.
For this film, I am going to give it a C. A potentially great film that is stained with stupid characters. Again, you don't have to agree with me and I am not expecting everyone to agree with me. I recommend Godzilla (1954), even though it is an allegory of World War II and not a straight up war film.
