So mostly all horror movies that happens on earth and are not too fancy but not based on laws of reality are magical realism

@Teragnau
You failed to properly present what magical realism is, and I wonder if you really understood what it was.
I shall maybe rewatch the two I saw to change my mind on that (or keep my opinion), but the examples in particular don't seem well closen. I would (from memory) rather place them in "fantastique" than "matical realism".

Quite disappointing.

I must add that I love my people’s realism. It’s something so unique, my generation didn’t get to experience all the magic but my parents and the parents of parents whom lived in the countryside they all have a story to tell, they all have something supernatural to say.

@SteveChiverton
Having a baby swapped with a 'Changeling' is also a very big part of Celtic culture and myth, particularly the Irish 'arm' of the culture - though versions exist throughout the '5 Celtic Kingdoms' [Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and Breton.]

Now think on, if it is also very strong in Latin-American culture and mythos, thousands of miles across oceans between cultures that the other did not know even existed when the tales were formed......... there can only be truth at the root.

@nani-ko1cm
OHMYGOD When I heard you naming "Tigers are not afraid" I literally screamed, that is one of my favorite movies and I don't find a lot of people who have watched it. As mexican, I love seeing this genre explored since most of our mainstream cinema relies on the same romcom formula over and over. Issa López made such a good job combining magical elements, the innocence of childhood and the horrors of organized crime that haunts the country. I especially loved how the film emphasized the fact that victims are not only those who are gone or never found but their families and loved ones as well. I could not recommend this movie enough, it hits so hard every time I watch it. Stella's reunion with her mom especially gets me ugly crying every. single. time. Thank you for bringing attention to this film, it's such an underrated gem of mexican cinema and more people should know about it.

Not sure if this belongs in the magical realism genre, but I really loved the anime film "Wolf Children." Yes, there are magical/fantastical elements, the children turn into wolves. However, the main plot of the film is focusing on the joys and sorrows of a mother raising her two children after their father passes away.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is just... the making of a pretentious movie... and I love movies that are like this... this movie fell flat it was boring and unnecessary with a myriad of possibilities brimming just below the surface. Sadly, none of them actually came to a boil. It's just flat in so many areas.

@rudymungaray8158
A challenge of ascribing the term Magical Realism to film is a literary device of the genre known as Authorial Reticence. Toward the beginning of the vid, you mention it as the supernatural being "normalized". In other words, Authorial Reticence doesn't bother with explaining magic as magic. In this way, Pan's Labyrinth doesn't quite fit the bill, although it obviously retains political critique (another major feature of magical realism). How about the film Biutiful?

A bit late, but i want to add some points to this topic, since i'm from Colombia, Gabriel García Marquez' country. Magic realism can also refer as the fantasizing of reality. Since Latinoamerica is a a territory extremely religious and spiritual, due to the entertwining of native indigenous folklore and religion; sometimes people, mostly elder people, tend to attribute bad and good things to divine providence.

For example, if a person cheats to his/her partner with other, it may be because the devil tricked the person; if somebody dies, and then it rains, is because the heaven mourns the death of that person, if somebody disapears, it may be because some nameless beast took him/her due to a sin or a curse this person may did or have.

So in this whirlwind of beliefs, fears, faiths and myths, the stories obout the divine an the impious interacting with peoples everyday lifes are basically countless, resulting in the mistification and magification of the reality, AKA Magic realism.

If you happen to be in any place of Latinoamerica, (For vacation, University exchange, School trip or whatever) a interesting thing to do is getting ti know peoples folklore and folkstories. some of the might be really interesting to learn.

Well living in Latin America seems to be very connected to the bizarre, and even paranormal, my country is full of that shit and everybody i know has some ghost stories, or ppl who claim they have been cursed or put under spell, that's mostly because of the native influence, they had their own 'magic' of sorts called payé, and the mythological creatures we learn on bedtime stories are the ones ppl always claim to see, until 10 years ago ppl would still look from hidden treasures lost in the war, there was supernatural things tied to that too

its also important to recognize that the popularity of that genre iin latin america was because it helped to ground the thing tht were happening in the region. Like ´Casa de los Espiritus' de Isabel Allende was written to make sense of the coup that led to a dictatorship in chile using the fantastical elements to aid a realistic story; and almost all the books of that genre with latin american authors are written to talk about issues of the region without being on the nose about it, and making esy to understant things about the situations that are central to the story and arent easily understand in real life.

No Country For Old men...after hearing Cormac McCarthy comment on magical realism, I am sure he put some elements into No Country. I think the Coens embraced some of it too. For example, the very strange scene when Moss crosses the bridge back into the US and he has that conversation with the boarder guard has always had a fairy tale like quality to me.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is from Colombia. A country a lot of people relate to with cocaine, death, danger, and drug trafficking. It was like this for a long time, where in most cities you couldn't step foot outside your house because of the constant fear infused by Pablo Escobar. To be honest coming from someone that lived through that horrible phase in one of the most dangerous cities considered at that time it felt surreal to me the darkness which housed every corner. It was like a movie and not a happy one. Although Colombia is a happy country we've had to live through some dark shit. This is why Gabriel Garcia Marquez is known for magical realism because he actually had to experience it in some way.

@janossandor6517
I don't really know if its magic that happens on the film: Adam's Apples, but its still wonderful how absurd the reality is, and how little motifs could represent the magnificent, and the divine, how incredible the luck / miracle could be. I think its a fantastic example of alternative religious stories.

Also I think David Lynch could also worth a mention here. His stories are mainly in between the banality of existence in the USA and the spiritual and hidden nature of spirits and toughts, mental disorders and paradox things that happen sometimes for the sake of moving out us from our comfort zone and stability.
