After trial and error I finally figured out how to get my Hi8 Camcorder to import onto a Mac Computer. Hopefully this can help others do the same! Комментарий от : @STRANGEOCCUPATIONS |
What is the OS of the Mac that can connect to Sony Handycam? Комментарий от : @yingtianfu |
A big thank you for your thoughtful assistance. Комментарий от : @david.4445 |
I don’t have an old Mac. I have a new M2 MacBook Air. In order to transfer my DV mini cassette video I ended up purchasing the Elgato video component system. The old Song camcorder has component video out. I also have a Panasonic AG-DVC 1000 camcorder. It has component outs too. Works great for old technology formats. Комментарий от : @DaleRogers |
You mentioned newer technology (computers) would or may work at importing Hi8 footage. Can you confirm what year Macbook would work? Thanks-Great video. Комментарий от : @hoppy760 |
Why didn’t you use Quicktime and import there? It will create a file. Done! Комментарий от : @stewy9013 |
I have a sony CCD-TRV37 with only the RCA yellow white cable inputs. Do you know how to connect it to a mac with those connections? Комментарий от : @bskyb |
I used to play it on screen and just screen record it. Комментарий от : @jme92685 |

OH MY DAMN! You said that the mac might not pick it up if the batter is bad. I removed the battery and went straight with the orig plug and BOOM! It connected immediately. WOW Комментарий от : @chrisc2046 |
You rock Комментарий от : @TylerH258 |
Thirty minutes? Oh god Комментарий от : @Doyourememberlove |
Great insight to try this on an older machine and find a solution that works. I had a box of tapes and only a few imported the rest came out blank because of the "NO DATA FROM DEVICE" problem. After watching this video I found this excellent video by MikeSytes that shows you how to install iMovie 9.09 on older systems. After installing the import didn't work the first time. I had to restart iMovie once and had to make sure the sony trv-520 menu item A/V DV OUT was on. But it's actually importing now. Комментарий от : @dansavage8089 |
is there a way to connect to a MacBook Pro not desktop Комментарий от : @KARICKTER |

Thanks for the video. Do you know what cable you would use if you were using your other Handycam - the one with the nightshot? I'm not sure one exists. Thanks again. Комментарий от : @stevenm.9458 |

I think I need to dig out a old MacBook Комментарий от : @Zimvg |
I have the Sony Digital 8 handicam. It has a usb plug in. Think that will work? Комментарий от : @Zimvg |
Couldn't you just use a screen capture at that point to just capture software to capture what you're seeing on screen? at 8:45 or so, I mean. Комментарий от : @Soul4Sail1 |
PSS: If anyone out there wants to pay me to digitze their tapes, based on that rate I'll beat it, by a G, you can pay me $6K,deal? lol No seriously, hmu! Комментарий от : @Soul4Sail1 |
I also have multiple Sony Handycam 8mm & Hi 8mm camera's & boxes of tapes (all mostly 8mm,not Hi 8mm,but both are still Analog, not Digital 8mm,which would be easier to render of course) A ton of old school concert footage mostly, which will make great YouTube Content for years to come. I have been slowly but surely digitizing over the last 2 decades & recently dusted off the old Dazzle USB interface & did a render w/Virtual Dub & plan to get VDub2 Freeware asap. Though on my 1st take: I get a loud ground loop sounding audio buzz over the tape audio & it has no ground to lift as you well know, they are 2 prong. Now I am having to use a Y-Adapter for the audio, as it only has a 1/8" (headphone) jack output for sound as far as analog goes. I know there are the Ferrite Filters, that maybe I can snap on the Y-Adapter line too & try that, which I haven't yet. So I seek any other advice on removing the audio hum on capture & other youtubers I watched could only seem to offer the fix after the fact w/editing software, but I obviously prefer, less editing & not capturing it in the 1st place. Now I see on the this particular Hi 8mm version: Sony Hi 8mm SteadyShot CCD-TRV608 NTSC I see it says: USB Streaming, I'm wondering if I can use a USB cable & avoid the Dazzle altogether, though I'm not sure if that just means, use it as a Webcam or actually stream a video tape playing to the computer, I'm using PC's. PS: Unrelated side note: The Nightshot is one huge missing feature on most modern consumer grade digital camera's now, it's like they made that a premium feature only available to the highest end, most expensive camera's on the market or Infrared lit security cameras, that really sucks. You can't get a camera that I am aware of, in the price range that these camera's were & esp not now, that has any kind of night vision or anything close to this, albeit it may not technically speaking be actual IR night vision, but it works well at night,is the point and that's so hard to find affordably. Anyone that has a suggestion for this, I welcome it. I know one way is to buy Security camera's that use it or I've even seen a Caterpillar Cell phone that has Infared like FLIR which was cool, not night vision, but both features are cool & Night vision is mainly what I want..so I can go UFO hunting, lol ;~) Комментарий от : @Soul4Sail1 |
The problem, I believe, exists with Apple -- I have a Mac Book Pro which should import my Hi8 footage via USB ( the camera is designed to do so) but the trouble is my camera a Sony Handycam Dig 8 Model DCR-TRV350 is no longer listed by Mac as supported ... a real load of crap. So I purchased a Roxio VHS Capture device and it did not do the job either ...waiting for Roxio support, but my gut feeling is that "Mac lack pop support" for my OLD Sony may be the cause lof all this CRAPPING OUT. Комментарий от : @RobertsonDMcI |
Thanks so much for this video! Watching what you did step by step is extremely helpful. I do have one comment though about the "No Data Device Detected" message that you got on your newer computer. I got the same message on my MacBook Pro with iMovie '10 while I was importing a video. However I think it did import because if I open iMovie the file is there and I can play it. Any ideas on this scenario? Do you think the message is just a glitch and it does import even if it says it doesn't detect a device? Комментарий от : @kimsanchez2610 |
Enjoyed that .... keeps this old geezer hopeful. My foray to video editing was via iMac 26" screen and, in 2003, Final Cut Express downstream from the over expensive (in those days) final cut, but sufficient and affordable. Unfortunate my iMac tuned out, dusted ... and my vid-editing on tape ended. However, trying to get back into via my wife's Mac Power Book. Unfortunately the only cable connection I have from my Sony Dig8 is via USB which iMovie 10.1.4 does not recognize (you point that out) and the DV cable which you were using doesn't fit the computer. Sooo, get the proper DV connection to power book, and probably purchase Final Cut Pro X which should recognize the Hi8 camera. I think the connection link to the Powerbook will be the issue.. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Комментарий от : @RobertsonDMcI |
this is just fucking confusing Комментарий от : @yonofuiprod |
Did you record analog video on your Hi8 CCD-TRVxx and played it back on your Digital8 SONY DCR-TRV46 ? That means DCR pllays analog and Digital? Комментарий от : @Abadani |
What operating system was the older mac running and what version of Imovie? Комментарий от : @nickboschmusic |

What if your camera just has S video, A/V out and RFU DC out? and I have a MacBook Air Комментарий от : @mariasvistchova |
I was able to import from the digital hi8 camcorder to my MacBook until a few days ago. Now iMovie/Final Cut/Adobe Premiere does not recognize the camera at all!! As far as I know my iMovie has not updated in between. WTF?! Any ideas? Комментарий от : @CC-jk5yk |
You're awesome! Thanks! Комментарий от : @halipalombo4001 |
"...luckily we had one lying around, because we like to hoard a lot of stuff..." LOL Great vid. thanks. Комментарий от : @centerice |
After trying one of our 100 cassettes that need transferring, we noticed the audio did not match the mouth movements. There was a delay. Any reason for this? Комментарий от : @stacys4893 |
Unfortunately mine not have that connection.. Комментарий от : @aycayass9904 |
i still cant seem to get that sony camera to pop up in imovie, any suggestions? Комментарий от : @Goatsmilk101 |

I have the same one you do & facing the same issue, Africa Videos havent been viewedin 20 yrs. So thankful for your video....I only have a HP Chromebook do you think it'll work? Комментарий от : @TGeiger29 |
The 1st camera you have recorded on, you put it on side and started working on 2nd camera. The 1st camera you recorded on does not have fire well out socket . I wanted to know how you have transferred videos from 1st camera. Also the picture you have displayed on your video is from 1st camera that's why I started watching your video but then you started downloading from 2nd camera. Which is completely waste of time. If you could show how to download from your 1st camera has black tape on it, which does not have the firewall out let on it then I will appreciate. Комментарий от : @RKVlogskhanrahi4 |
My imac 2015, does not have FireWire!! Комментарий от : @zibaa1234 |
I want to transfer my digital8 videos onto my MacBook air 2017 & I've bought a FireWire cable, a thunderbolt-firewire adapter and a thunderbolt cable to connect to my Mac. The problem is that my iMovies app won't recognise my sony digital handycam so I don't have the option to import... Can anyone help? Комментарий от : @farhatseka |

Same as always...way too much talking...get to the point asap. Thanks. Комментарий от : @kevinwatkins3856 |
You are the goddamn man. I had imported tons of old VHS tapes using a Digital8 camera as a passthrough years ago. Now I found more tapes to do and I couldn't figure it out, but then I checked my old laptop and it also had iMovie 9 on it (I had been trying version 10) and it worked immediately. Thanks so much. I was getting so frustrated. Комментарий от : @jasondashney |
which camcorder is that? Комментарий от : @RetroShare2 |
Thank you 🙏🏽 thank you 🙏🏽 Комментарий от : @priscillanoir9132 |
Awesome video, this article has a lot of great info about which cameras to buy if you want to do this. Some have better features for capturing the footage than others: tdb0.wordpress.com/2015/01/31/digitizing-video8-and-hi8-recordings/ Комментарий от : @notreallyasloth |
What state do you live in? Im just curious on that beach Комментарий от : @kriogenx0 |
To do this on a new Mac with usb-c you would need to buy two cable connecters which are the firewire- thunderbolt and then thunderbolt to USB-C which I will link below. Thats all you need! Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter Комментарий от : @Yoncena |
Just bought an old MacBook for exactly this purpose Комментарий от : @7766aaa33 |
Did you ever figure out how to do the mini DV tapes? Комментарий от : @kingwizkhalifa1 |
Forever the Dream xo Комментарий от : @LindaFoyle |
Your method does work, but it's the lowest quality way to do it. What you should do is get an S-Video capture card and record from the cameras S-Video output. Using the Firewire cable causes the 20 year old camera to do the analog to digital conversion, where as using a modern S-Video capture card is a massive improvement over the analog to digital conversion of the camera. Just curious what is the model number of your Digital8 camera? Комментарий от : @WelcometoVideoCity |
