 | You know if he took just a few steps to the right he could run without risking getting run into be everyone else on the beach. Seriously though. A long, challenging, uninterrupted shot doesn’t make a film great. It’s basically a special effect that limits you and it defeats the purpose of the film format existing.  | To all of you praising this film , most likely Adultchilds brainwashed with years of playing games, and CG watch 'Paths of Glory' to see a 'true' masterpiece of filming a First World War film. Accepting the technology was good but that is what you lot only see. It was far too clinical, clean, unrealistic, unauthentic and shouted this is a film set. What a joke at the obvious use of lime stone trench brought in for the the graphical effect of white against brilliant new green grass at the end when where troops conveniently being staggered out for him to run ahead off. Also they never ran they walked Where was the barb wire, craters, dead bodies, mud, etc etc. All the uniforms looked new and dried clean. A torrential whirling white water rapids that would be found in a mainly hilly or mountainous area in a mainly flat areas where, the battles took place. Then a flat grey area with neatly and even slopes either side they walked through. Overall totally unconvincing and really an insult to men like my grandfather who right from the very beginning lived in mud, body parts, rats, continuous smoke, craters full of muddy water that never dried out. I grew up with a famous series of hard bound books full of actual photos of that time, and not one of any of those photos in any form was like this terrible film. My grandfather who was at the Somme before his death would never speak of it when I often asked him as a child but on his death bed in hospital holding my hand for about three hours while crying recounted the horrors especially the conditions he and his mates were surrounded by - in no way does this film reflect that. What does and I know four old timers back in the sixties at an OAP home I did some volunteering who I sat and watched Paths of Glory with Is a scene when a General marching through a trench and comes across a soldier that he shouts at for being a coward and a bomb lands near by and he throws him self to ground, looks up and sees the soldier he shouted and the others watching him on the floor, had not even moved and showed the slightest movement or reaction to the bomb going off. One of them looked at me and said "That's what it was like", his mates all nodded. That by Stanley Kubrick is 'brilliant' and masterful film-making not this 'boys with toys' with their camera gear you all think is so wonderful . I doubt most of you (if any still reading this angry rant) is that a truly good film does not put the technology at the front but the story, the human condition and to transport you to being there as it actually was NOT that the whole film can be shot in one continuous shot (so what !!).
