Being an extra is largely a bore. It doesn't deserve a video. You occasionally see a star, but you're told not to talk to them.

I did it once. It was something to get off my "Bucket List". Just clapping and cheering in a crowd of 2300. Meals included. But not that kind of food. Burgers and sandwiches. I went to a womans house and she asked me if i could be on the Ex Grounds by 8 the next morning

I tell people i was in a movie with Meg Ryan and Omar Epps. True. But Meg Ryan was microscopic from where i was sitting. Ànd it was a bad movie

Against The Ropes

Budget was about 15 million and ticket sales were abput 4 million......GOOD LOSS!!!!!!

The food is usually terrible. Last production I was on the Vegan breakfast (which is favoured by Jews, Hindus, Muslims and people with food intolerances as well as vegans) was a sausage made of beef and pork and we weren't told this until several bites in. Sometimes we have to eat standing up in the rain. Don't believe everything you read.

I was a heavily featured extra one episode of a new Apple TV series that's going to come out soon. Part of my costume was missing for one of the scenes and we didn't realize until we had wrapped for the day 🥲 I'm now terrified that it's going to be obvious and that I'll be blamed as the extra who fucked up the shot 🙄

@PSPguy2
You never know what trying for an extra job can lead to. Although I had zero experience, I went to a cattle call along with hundreds of others for an extra job on a James Bond film. I thought getting to work on a movie set for a day or two would be fun. After filling out paperwork, having my photo taken and a very short interview I left thinking, ok, that was interesting but slim chance. The next day I got a call from the casting director asking if I was free to work for the next 6 weeks. When I said yes, she said they wanted me to be the double and stand in for one of the leading actors in the movie since we had similar looks and build. When I accepted she asked me to come back for a wardrobe fitting, meet with make-up people, etc. that same day as they were going to start filming in 5 days. What a great experience! I learned a lot about shooting a film and what better movie to work on than a big budget James Bond film. Being in the action scenes was amazing and the pay was great too! Even if I went 1 minute into overtime on the set I automatically had my pay doubled for the day! 6 weeks shooting out on location with early morning call times and long hours could sometimes be grueling but totally worth it.

My partner has done a couple background character gigs and he loves it. He’s in a deleted scene in geostorm, a spot in a show where he was just in an aisle shopping, and another show during a protest scene. He made about $300-$400 for half a day of being on set.

I worked the set of Taps and Simon is right. The food was great. Also Tom Cruise is tiny. Sean Penn, Tom, and Timothy Hutton were snotty little punks who wouldn’t talk or acknowledge anyone else. George C. Scott was a true gentleman and friendly. lol

@FatJesusLive
I am a professional background actor, you can find me on IMDB (Javier Garcon). Yes, I am Fat! Yes, that is what the film industry looks for when it comes to family films or comedies, When they have main actors that are not that pretty they want less pretty background actors to make their actors look better. They don't like Models to upstage their own Main talking part actors. After you get in the door it is easy to get job after job after job because 1) you know what to do! 2) they are comfortable with you and they already have all your information 3) the Director already worked with you in the past they prefer to work with you again. Be ready to be disappointed in being an extra because you're going to be blurred out in the background but that's a good thing! WHY? because all you have to do is change the color of your shirt and pants and come back on another episode as another background character and get paid again! So are you there to get paid or just to be in a scene? that is the question. I have long hair! So I tie it back and wear Glasses then wear a hat. I come back for the next episode with contact lenses with my hair down. and no hat and a cigar. Next episode I dress up with a Coat and shave my beard and put on a wig and makeup to give my appearance to another person. I accomplished this on one TV show for 2 months staying all the way in the back! while everyone else was so eager to be filmed in the front. In Miami FL, That's $120 a day 3 to 5 times a day, each week. What a good 2 months. (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story)

@Mariesoul6
My concern knowing I’d definitely have to travel for jobs is not know how long I’d have to be there for or if they’re gonna pay for hotel fees. There was one job I was looking at that paid for the transportation to the state they filmed in. But it didn’t say how long you’d be there for and if housing was provided while you’re there. I don’t want to potentially book a job to later find out I’m going to have to stay longer than imagined and work out a hotel situation. I just want to know what to expect. I guess it’s different for each production maybe.

I was an extra ACW reenactor in North South the miniseries and the movie Glory. $50 per day... food served for 100’s at a time was marginal. It was fun... even doing the physically dangerous stuff. Apparently the local hospital reserved a floor for us as the ever ready ambulances hauled a few of us away after every shot.... they got their money’s worth....

When I was kid, my younger brother and I were extras in the Canadian made for TV movie called "Ice Princess".
We got the job because at the time my father was an audio tech and boom operator who was working on said film.

And yes, the food was amazing.

Wow...That's messed up all hell...So,they definitely NEED extras,because it would be weird as hell if there was no one in a given film or TV show that wasn't directly related to the plot,and yet they are treated the exact opposite,as if they are useless and unnecessary.Thats depressing.I shall.organize and extra REVOLUTION! We shall not stand,or sit,or pretend to have a conversation with a friend we haven't seen in a long time while we pretend to eat shit food that's been sitting in front of us for hours! Strike! A pretty accurate description, except the food is never "amazing", usually pretty good though, sometimes not very warm and too often disappointing, and always plentiful (you can put on a lot of weight on a shoot.) In winter, you have to wear several layers of undergarments, including long johns, standing long periods out in the cold, often without a coat, because it is a summer scene and you get chilled to the bone.

Didn't mention that you often get out of bed at 4am to leave at 5am to drive two hours to make a 7am call time far away, then work 14 hours and drive two hours home, and then you might repeat the process the next day or for several days. Also, out of all the availability queries you get, only 10% result in a job and you are never really sure if you will work until the day before, and you can be canceled anytime.

Lastly, there is little fame in this work, you can probably spot yourself in only 10% of the scenes that you have worked in and then it is usually the back of your head.

@bofranciscofilms
Payment is a lot better than minimum for most feature films. Going off of FAA rates that are pretty standard, basic daily rate before add ons is £92.69 for a bog standard extra. Things like cutting your hair is an extra £20, minimal dialogue - £25, decent amount of dialogue - £50, even things like getting wet in a pool or rain etc means extra pay!

I was an extra in Ace Ventura 2. The food was great, we were on set for 2 days the scene I was in lasted 30 seconds in the movie. Tommie Davidson was very personable between takes joking with us. We only saw Jim Carrey when he filmed his scenes didn't speak to anyone. It took 4 hours in makeup to get his hair like that. It was a good $350.00 for a couple days "work"

@mcpartridgeboy
BS 60-90% of extras are REALLY attractive, the food is good but dont expect lobster and steak, ive never seen that even on the sets were they spend alot on food, if its a big production with hundreds of extras you might just get a tub of pasta and a small slice of cake for your main meal. Its NOT boring being on set you get to talk to shitloads of beautiful women for hours on end eating great food, your expected to be proffesional but you are treated very very well and most ADs are rediculously nice people. For tips miming just talk to them as normal but without noise. It is often BLOODY cold on set more so than too hot.

While I was in the military, I was an extra on the remake of "Invaders from Mars" with Karen Black. Some of the movie was filmed on MCAS El Toro in California. I was lucky enough to be picked for an extra scene as a gate guard. We didn't get any food or anything like that.
